SKOS is an area of work developing specifications and standards to support the use of knowledge organisation systems (KOS) such as thesauri, classification schemes, subject heading lists, taxonomies, other types of controlled vocabulary, and perhaps also terminologies and glossaries, within the framework of the Semantic Web.

There are three RDF vocabularies under active development: SKOS Core | SKOS Mapping | SKOS Extensions. There is also the SKOS API, a web service API for interacting with a KOS datasource.

SKOS or Simple Knowledge Organisation System is a family of formal languages designed for representation of thesauri, classification schemes, taxonomies, subject-heading systems, or any other type of structured controlled vocabulary. SKOS is built upon RDF and RDFS, and its main objective is to enable easy publication of controlled structured vocabularies for the Semantic Web. SKOS is currently developed in the W3C framework.

SKOS steht für Simple Knowledge Organisation System (frei übersetzt „einfaches System zur Organisation von Wissen“) und ist eine Familie formaler Sprachen, die für die Darstellung von Thesauri, Klassifikationsschemas, Taxonomien oder beliebigen anderen Typen strukturierter kontrollierter Vokabulare entworfen wurde. Damit soll die einfache Veröffentlichung kontrollierter, strukturierter und maschinenlesbarer Vokabulare für das Semantische Web ermöglicht werden.

SKOS wird zurzeit im Rahmen des W3C-Frameworks entwickelt und baut auf dem Resource Description Framework (RDF) und RDF-Schema auf.

Es beinhaltet eine Zusammenstellung von Spezifikationen und Standards zur Unterstützung von Wissensorganisationssystemen (Knowledge Organisation Systems) wie etwa Thesauri, Klassifikationsschemata, Taxonomien und andere Arten von kontrolliertem Vokabular.
